Enjoying London Affordably

London is one of the most amazing cities you will ever visit – with strong ties to the United States,Europe and Asia it is also one of the world’s most important cities. Indeed, travelling here will introduce you to a vibrant, multi-cultural place that you are sure to love. Of course all this comes with one major downside – it is incredibly expensive. Aside from getting cheap flights to London there are a few things you can do to stretch your funds as far as possible.

Travel Cheaply: Get an Oyster Card

To see the best of London you will need to move around from place to place to visit different sights.  Public transport is the only option (taxis are very expensive) and there is a vast network that can get you pretty much anywhere. To limit this cost you should get an Oyster Card – a card you can put money on and use on all forms of public transport. The best part about this is that there is a maximum amount you can pay a day (around £5) – so once you’ve done a few trips everything else is free.

Avoid the Temptation and Eat In

It is incredibly tempting to avail yourself to the many culinary treats that London has to offer. Sadly, if you are there on a budget it is probably best to avoid this altogether and buy groceries which you can cook in your hostel. Of course, if you are only there for a little while you should treat yourself to at least one meal out: if that is the case it might be best to try an old classic like fish and chips or Indian food, Britain’s adopted national cuisine.

Search for Free Sights

Many tourist destinations in London come with entrance fees which normally run to around £10 –these fees will really pile up if you are seeing a few such sights a day. Luckily, there are many great things you can see for free. You can wander to Buckingham Palace and gaze at the splendour of the Royalty and then see the towering Big Ben just down the road. London also has some of the best museums in the world, all of which are free. Be sure to check out the National History Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

For tourists it doesn’t get any better than London, alas it also doesn’t get much more expensive. So if you are travelling here on a budget make sure you adopt these cost savings measures, otherwise you might remember your time there for its assault on your wallet, rather than its great sights.
