Try Tenerife

As I sit at my laptop preparing to write about my experiences in Tenerife, I find myself floundering at how to present them, daunted by the task of aptly conveying what was one of, if not the, greatest weeks of my life. As I fondly recall these vivid memories, I remember a snippet of information I gleaned from the monotonous nasal tones of the pilot as he announced our arrival at the island: situated just west of the coast of Africa, Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, a small spattering of tropical land masses interspersed across the Atlantic Ocean. Before I embarked on my trip I visited mydestination.com/Tenerife for plenty of ideas on where to stay and what to do on the island.

Upon stumbling out of the cramped tube of claustrophobia and overpriced nibbles that was my budget airline plane and catching my first breath of fresh Tenerife air, the sun hit me harder than the under-sized frame of the exit door, which struck my head as I hastily scrambled for freedom.  As the heat washed over me I gazed over my surroundings; large mountains loomed in the distance amid a backdrop of pure blue skies.

After haphazardly bumbling my way through the airport, getting bleeped and rigorously searched by a gruff security guard as I forgot to remove my belt with metal buckle at the metal detector along the way, I eventually made it to my hotel…but to a heart-stopping surprise. As he rifled through my booking documents, the man behind the counter informed me that I had landed on the wrong island, and that I was at the wrong hotel. My pulse flat-lined for around 3 seconds before the assistant took pity on my twitching, blood-drained, wide-eyed-deer-in-headlights face and told me that he was ‘just kidding’.

Fortunately, being mere minutes from the beach meant that I had plenty of time to recover with the help of some sun and the glorious Tenerife weather. My hotel was located within 400 metres of the Playa de Las Americas strip, which is one of the major tourist resorts on the island, being rife with bars, nightclubs, restaurants and shops to explore. The nightlife was incredible, with the entire strip of bars and nightclubs effervescently glowing with vibrant lights and an electrifying atmosphere to die for. Cocktails and drinks were stunningly cheap, with many bars offering pints for only 1 Euro.

My two most memorable days were at Siam Park and Loro Park, two of the island’s flagship attractions. Siam park is recognized as Europe’s greatest water park and after 2 rip-roaring, adrenaline-fuelled days out there (one just wasn’t enough…), I fully believe this to be true. It features a range of rides of varying intensity, and boasts some of the most impressive architecture I’ve ever seen (the whole park was so well built and packed with ridiculously large rides that it truly felt magical, even for a cynical 19 year old student like myself).

The mere thought of Siam’s most face-meltingly fast ride, the truly frightful Tower of Power, is still enough to send shivers down my spine. Looming impressively over the rest of the park, it is a vast tower with a long, nigh on vertical slide that eventually curves into a narrow chute which runs through a tank of sharks. Meanwhile, further impressive sights were to be seen at Loro park, which is a world-renowned animal park boasting a vast array of impressive animals including tigers, gorillas, penguins and jaguars. It also offers awe-inspiring shows which exhibit impressive training of dolphins, orcas and sea lions.

Tenerife is a truly amazing island to visit on holiday, offering such an exciting array of things to see and do that tourists will be left with not a second to spare as they race to the endlessly fun attractions that are copiously spread across the beautifully sun-kissed island.
