Help us Plan the Ultimate California Road Trip
Surf’s Up!
Calling all California residents, road trip experts, and foodie extraordinaries: We need your help!
Bob and I are planning the ultimate surf road trip along California’s coastline. Thanks to Bill from Vintage Surfari Wagon, we have our wheels- now we only need the plan!
We are picking up our restored VW camper bus from their Los Angeles area location and have almost a week to spread out our time surfing, camping and exploring California. The VW Surfari wagon is completely restyled and comes fully equiped with all the camping ultities you need.
Sounds awesome, right?!
This is where you come in: Where should we go? What should we see? Have you camped before- know any great beaches for camping? Food specialities? Great surf breaks? Good photo ops? We would love any advice!
While you all help with the itinerary, I’m going to go brush up on my surf lingo- Hang Ten! Totally Tubular!

Oh my gosh – that is so much fun!!! what a fantastic idea!!
Big Sur, for sure!! I loved that place!!
SLO has great car camping as well!
Hopefully, you make it up to my neck of the woods, Sonoma/Napa wine country. It is absolutely gorgeous with dozens of wineries to do tastings at. There are beautiful camping grounds at Armstrongs woods nearby and all along the beach.
If you come this way, I own a restaurant in Sonoma County that I would love for you to come eat at

I got nothing for you, but I’m looking forward to reading about the road trip.
Check out Roadfood.com for some great tips on places to hit along your route.
Did you just say “totally tubular”?
If you make it to Oregon I’ve got some spots for you. Sorry, can’t help with Cali
Wow, sounds like ‘the’ surfing trip to make. Anyway, which VW are you guys getting and how long is your sufari going to be?
That’s a pretty sweet ride. Make a list of the National Parks and cross off as many as you can. None of them will disappoint!
Two of my favorite areas have already been mentioned — Sonoma wine country and Big Sur. Sonoma County is more than inland vineyards, too. It has an amazing coastline. Don’t know how much surfing you can do there — the water is really cold, but it’s beautifully rugged. Stop at Bodega Bay and Jenner. I know there’s camping on the beach up there, too just can’t think of which ones.
wow! I’m really looking forward to hearing about this trip. My sister has been living in San Diego for the past 7 years and I’ve never visited, but would love to, so I hope you stop by at least for a while there and show me how beautiful it is.

One week is definitely not enough. I am back home in Cali after 6 months in Latin America and hiking my butt off. Suggestions: Big Sur (beach camping several miles south of there; the Redwoods (my home); Yosemite and Sequoia NPs (not on the coast), Malibu and Santa Cruz for surfing, etc., etc., etc.
zomg, that van is AMAZING! So jealous right now. =)
Are you heading to San Diego? Tons of great places to surf — Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Coronado. In Ocean Beach you should get a burger (and milkshake with actual ice-cream in it!) from Hodads, and then Mexican food at Baja Betty’s in Hillcrest. Kate O’Sessions park in PB has wonderful views of the city along the coastline – go at dusk for a pretty sunset.
And if you decide to go into Tijuana, park your car in one of the huge lots for not that much moolah and just walk across – so much easier, no car insurance hassles, and you don’t have to wait two hours to drive back over the border when you’re done.
Damn, I’m so jealous of your ride, it’s awesome!! I wish we had a wagon like that we did our road trip on the west coast. Would have been way more cool than a dirty white SUV
I keep forgetting about this trip for you guys!! So awesome!!
Not sure if you’ve made this trip already, but if you are in Ventura, you MUST go to Beach House Tacos on the Ventura pier. THE best fish tacos ever- the fried baja is the stuff other tacos dream of becoming. Trust.
