For the last couple of years, we’ve planned a spring ski trip with several other families. It’s one of my favorite vacations each year and gives me something to plan and look forward to after a busy holiday season. Last year we flew to Reno and drove out to Lake Tahoe for four days of skiing, ice skating and snowshoeing. We are always dreaming of places for this annual ski trip and I think Park City, one of our favorite destinations, should be our pick for next year!
Park City is only 40-minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport, making it a super easy, direct flight for most families on the west coast. Once we arrive at SLC, we can go straight to the Alamo rental car pavilion and caravan out to Park City. We are always excited to explore the historic main street (and see the cool “ski-in, ski-out”), ski and snowboard the two different resort mountains and see wildlife on a snowshoe hike. I’ve signed up for the latest travel restrictions and guidelines from Park City and Deer Valley, so we know how to travel to the area as safely as possible.
Planning Tips to Know Before you Go:
- Book plane tickets as soon as you can for the best deal and route.
- Reserve your ski lift tickets a week in advance or purchase an Epic or Ikon ski pass if you plan on skiing many days or have several ski trips lined up. Both passes grant access to resorts around the world. We picked the Ikon Pass because we have been teaching Augustine how to ski at Big Bear Mountain, near our house. Epic Pass works at Park City and Ikon Pass works at Deer Valley.
- Weekday lift tickets are more affordable than weekend tickets, so think about organizing your trip to include weekdays on the slopes and enjoy snowshoeing or tubing on the weekends.
- Many hotels offer multi-bedroom suites with common living areas and kitchens, perfect for traveling with a group. My three favorites are Stag Lodge, Stein Eriksen and Silver Star.
- Spring skiing typically means warmer weather, so pack layers which you can shed as the temperatures rise.
- Park City has dozens of other fun winter activities that are perfect in springtime, including snow biking, outdoor ice-skating and cross-country skiing.
Since we have a first year skier in our four year old and a few timid skiers in our group, we are so excited to ski Deer Valley. This resort mountain in Park City is ski-only and limits ticket sales each day, so our timid skiers can perfect their skills. Without the crowds or snowboarders around, they will be able to go down tons of ski runs and gain confidence in their abilities. By the last day, they should all be skiing more advanced runs and having a blast.
