#KidAugustine’s First Plane Ride

tips for traveling with infants

This is the thing: I know #KidAugustine will never remember her first plane ride. In fact, there will be a lot of moments from the first year or two that she won’t remember. And while I understand that, I’m still trying to bring as much joy and adventure to her life as possible. Sure, she won’t remember what happened as we went through security for the first time, but I will and I’m sure I’ll tell that story at her wedding some day.

The night before our flight I had the best intentions: make sure we were well packed and that I double checked all the important things, like car seat, pump, bottles, her favorite octopus wubbanub, sleep sack and noise machine. Also, as I’m sure you’ve noticed on her Instagram account, she has a lot of adorable clothes that must be packed along with their matching accessories.

But as with all great plans, something happened that stopped my attention from being 100% on our packing. Bob came home from a conference and he was super sick with food poisoning. It was awful and I tried to take the best care of him as I could (along with the dogs and Augustine). We both got very little sleep that night and woke up around 4:45 for a 9am take-off time.

Sadly leaving Bob until he meets us in Florida on Thursday, #KidAugustine and I kissed him goodbye and made our way to Virgin’s airport check-in.

I checked the car seat and one big bag that had all our stuff in it. I carried on #KidAugustine in the Baby Bjorn and had my laptop in her diaper bag. I was pretty proud of myself that I was able to pack so light.

We had priority boarding and TSA Pre-check so we flew through security in record pace- only problem was that her diaper leaked everywhere. This has literally NEVER. HAPPENED. BEFORE. Never.

Of course, it would happen as we are going through security at LAX. Before a 5 hour flight. No big deal, I was super mom and took her into the bathroom and we changed outfits real quick before grabbing a huge bottle of water and boarding the flight.

This was about the time I realized I forgot the wubbanub- parent fail.

I had brought along these 4 oz prepackaged formulas to mix into a bottle so I could feed her as we were taking off and landing. They are amazing and highly suggest to any of my friends who are traveling with a baby. Such a lifesaver considering I didn’t really want to breastfeed on the plane. (Just not my cup of tea) parent win!

#KidAugustine watched as we took off and I told her stories of some of my favorite travel memories, flying across the United States, just as we were doing then. She fell asleep for most of the flight and I just held her, she made a very soft cooing sound a few times but otherwise was silently dreaming of her next big adventure.

As we were walking off the plane, #KidAugustine got her wings from the flight attendant and I felt like a super proud mom. (Not that she really did anything too special, but for some reason it felt like a huge milestone and accomplishment.)

We’re in Florida for the week and I can’t wait to show her around to all my favorite places- including the spot where Bob and I got married. That should make for a fun photo shoot. 🙂
