If you think about the perfect holiday with kids, you might not immediately think of a city break as the ideal solution. However, when it comes to London, you should think again, because there are few cities that offer so much (and a lot of it for free) to kids and families.
The first thing you’ll need to do is find a good base, and ideally somewhere with great transport connections (so you don’t have to spend too much travelling), a great place is Kensington, primarily because for value and quality you won’t find a match for a Kensington hotel in London (particularly if you book through a company like Millennium Hotels).
5. Kew Gardens
Kew is an enormous open space with lots to explore and do, it’s ideal for families with very young kids as the gardens have just opened a ‘Climbers and Creepers’ fun area for 3 to 9 year-olds. For older kids, there’s still lots to see and do, including the tree-top walkway which is a remarkable achievement and offers a unique view of trees from the top.
4. The London Eye
Originally planned as a temporary tourist attraction, the London Eye was so popular that it’s become a popular fixture. Although a little expensive, it’s fantastic entertainment and offers an unparalleled view of central London.
3. The Science Museum
Absolutely free to enter for kids of all ages (including grown up ones), the Science Museum is the archetype of entertaining and educating at the same time. With so many different floors and things to do, whatever your kids are interested in, the Science Museum will have it.
2. The Changing of the Guard
Buckingham Palace’s beefeaters are legendary, and no trip to the capital is complete without at least trying to make one of them laugh. Pictures with the red soldiers with their enormous black caps are a must, and you should stay around to watch the changing of the guard ceremony as well, it’s an unforgettable experience.
1. Kid’s Zone at the National Army Museum
50 minutes of going wild in a completely safe environment, the opportunity to dress up, whizz around on slides, storm parapets and generally have a great time makes the Kid’s Zone at the National Army Museum an absolute treat. Until recently the Zone was completely free, but now you’ll have to pay a small amount, still, it’s great fun and gives the adults a little time to head off and explore for themselves.
