Arriving in Venice late one Fall afternoon, I skipped off the train and right to the waters edge. After years of seeing Monet’s famous Venice paintings hung in museums around NYC and London, I wanted to see his world for myself.
And it was magical.
Monet was in Venice almost 100 years before me, but the way the sun set over the water and bounced off the buildings looked almost identical to his famous strokes. The sky was muted and all the pastels softly glistened against the water and I felt . It was like I was there with Monet, that I was apart of this Venice that he created and so many people admire.
It’s no surprise to me that Impressionism is always favored by art lovers just as it’s no surprise that traveler after traveler loves Venice. They are both easy to get lost in and marvel at, and no matter how many times you look at them, they evoke a new sweet response that is different to each person.
Because of Venice, Monet will always be my favorite… and because of Monet, Venice will always be my favorite.
*None of Monet’s most famous paintings are watercolors- they are actually oil on canvas!
