Traveler’s Night In: It’s in the Bag Edition

This week’s topic on Traveler’s Night In, a “tweet-up” for travelers, was “It’s in the Bag”- Luggage Edition.  Ten questions were asked, tagged #TNI, and @friedman_rachel said it best with “I also like that old saying. Pack your bags. Now talk out half the clothes and put in twice the money”!
Here are the questions:

Q1: How do you pack? Cram or organized?

  • @DaninAustralia Sometimes I even put space saver bags INSIDE other space saver bags… I need all of the room I can get!
  • @MiddleSeatView Heading there I pack last minute, but very organized. Coming home, it’s all about the cram.
  • @DougFressh Organised. Everything in its place, reduces packing time if everything knows where it’s supposed to go
  • @Technosyncratic I’m a compulsive organizer, so I have all the gadgets (packing cubes, compressing bags, etc.).
  • @packdsuitcase Organized- everything folded and in their right spot. Which is not how I live my life. Go figure.
  • @itchyfeet_kg To avoid bag fees I just wear all my clothes then pack into my empty hand luggage when on board. Hot but always works.

Q2. What’s in your carry-on?

  • @mobilelawyer Day backpack. Camera equipment. Laptop. Kindle. The stuff I’d be bummed to have stolen or lose.
  • @AllTravelSites I usually try not to check a bag, so everything will be in my carry-on
  • @JuliaConey Kindle, iPhone, Mac computer; cosmetic bag of beauty treats; loose leaf tea; & magazines.
  • @WeekendInParis Driving glasses, sunglasses, lip balm, wallet, passport, iPhone, gum, pen, info on where parked car, headphones, mags
  • @toeuropewithkid Earplugs and Xanax.
  • @HistoricHotel Scarf, maps, historic info on where we’re headed, chap stick, and hand sanitizer

Q3. Your must-have item when traveling?

  • @thecitizeNY I know this sounds crazy, but I go nowhere without a pair of tweezers. Don’t ask.
  • @amandaelsewhere Camera aka the free souvenier maker.
  • @BootsnAll A companion. I don’t do the solo travel thing well.
  • @TravelMaestro: Have to have a pashmina – has a world of uses!
  • @jcreaturetravel:  I always carry this cool scarf with hidden pockets – it doubles as a purse. http://bit.ly/gT6Ejn
  • @christinenspain  Camera & cute outfits Who says u have 2 look like dirty hippie just bc ur traveling?

Q4. Suitcase Diet: What do you leave behind when you travel?

  • @kymri my dogs, even though the little one tries to make a bed of my suitcase as I pack.
  • @italylogue I also have a much more colorful wardrobe than my travel wardrobe shows: when I travel, it’s pretty much all black.
  • @BridalTravelGuy:  My dignity
  • @WanderLoz:  Heels. (Shoes are always the hardest for me, but such a space saver with every pair you leave behind.)
  • @innalameda Left my laptop at home last time and slept like a baby for two weeks straight!
  • @raghavmodi I try to leave behind my wife, but she finds her way to the airport. Damn 😉 (Oh just realized she follows me here) hello couch

Q5. Biggest luggage disaster while traveling?

  • @LifeOutofaSuitc KLM lost my bags on the way to malaysia for FIVE days – had to go to the beach in jeans & black t-shirt #epicfail
  • @KatyHarrison Coming back from Spain, travel friend was trying to fly home w/ sword from Toledo. Customs didn’t like that
  • @kelleyferro Lost my luggage in the Galapagos, luckily I packed a bathing suit & was set! moral: always pack bathing suit!
  • @katyabroad a US border guard completely tipping out my entire suitcase all over the place and yelling at me when i had a connection to make
  • @ishouldlogoff Dad’s suitcase lost on the way to Italy. Everyday owner of pension offered to wash his underwear. Awkward.
  • @travelerkate Electric toothbrush got turned on when checking it. Luckily nobody thought it was a bomb;unluckily people assumed something else

Q6. What luggage features can you not live w/out?

  • @theworldcalls Wheels
  • @kerrberr Expandable! If I don’t have plenty of room when I leave, I know I’m going to have to ship stuff back.
  • @HouseinJerez A Working zipper is all I require.
  • @BckPackerBanter …a waterproof compartment/bag for my wetsuit/boardies, always nip in for a last minute dip 🙂
  • @GAT_ChinaTours After buying suitcases that have 4 wheels, I’m never going back. My suitcase isn’t a drag anymore 😉

The Visit Britian Suitcase we won from #TNI!!

Q7. Do you prefer to check or carry-on?

  • @RickGriffin I prefer to carry on, but usually have to check luggage when carrying video equipment.
  • @worldschooled gotta check it. My trips are long term and now we have two kids in tow.
  • @treycocktail Carry-on. The faster you get out of the airport the sooner you get to the beach bar! #
  • @ehalvey: Checking because I can bring back wine from trips.
  • @ZipSetRachel:  I packed for a week-long ski trip last month in a carry-on. Enough said.
  • @indie_savant: Carry-on! I love knowing that I could get things out of my bag anytime I want.

  • @mmc67 just the damn soda the airport sold me on the way in

  • @Velcro108:  Snow Globes. Thanks alot, Bin Laden.
  • @LuxeTiffany:  Would really like to find the black market store where all our 4oz+ liquids, creams and gels are being sold!

Q9. How does your luggage reflect your personality?

  • @alexberger Let’s just say my luggage has loooooads of….character?
  • @McMedia Old & Tired about says it all #NeedMyBagsLifted
  • @locationSCOUTED It’s electric blue so I can spot it in a crowd. It’s kinda stylish so it won’t embarrass me. It expands, when needed.
  • @AmericanSahara When my old duffel comes through the chute people think “What’s with that?” Then they see me.
  • @Shipsandtrips It’s lovely on the inside…
  • @BreatheDreamGo Do I look fat in this luggage? 3 years–never black. Right now it’s purple.
