Traveler’s Night In: Travel Photography

This week’s topic on Traveler’s Night In, a “tweet-up” for travelers, was Travel Photography.  Ten questions were asked, tagged #TNI, and I think @TravelsceneUSA summed it up with “Love looking back over pics taken trips taken years ago, brings back all the memories”.

Here are the questions:

Q1. Most memorable travel experience captured in a photo?

  • @NGSTravelEditor 2 years old with elephant in backyard at our house in the Congo
  • @Jodi_Kendall Photographing a herd of wild pygmy elephants snorkeling w/ their trunks across a deep Malaysian river in the rain.
  • @GoApril The picture of me swan diving off of a bridge in NZ – I really can’t believe it’s me sometimes in the picture!!!
  • @AndreeTomlinson My daughter’s first time meeting Mickey Mouse :D!
  • @kirsten_al Standing in front of Stonehenge on a trip w/ my mother, is so far one of my best travel memories captured in photos. Amazing place
  • @joepiehl Standing on top of a glacier with my family, during a storm, while visiting Denali National Park (Alaska).

Q2. Do you always carry a camera when you travel? If so, favorite camera/accessory?

  • @scflier Yes. I always carry a point-and-shoot camera and a mini-tripod. I prefer cameras that use easy-to-find AA batteries
  • @_ZeynepK always.canon eos 5d mark ii and my fav L series lenses
  • @FrankDiCesare Yes. I never travel without my camera or my Joby gorillapod.
  • @RickGriffin YES!! My Twitter bio says “Life is a Journey, bring a camera”
  • @travel_version I *always* carry a camera when I travel. No case, no tripod but spare batteries are a must have!
  • @KieraReilly Absolutely – multiple cameras – pocket digital, iPhone, DSLR. Favorite accessory – extra memory cards.A2

Q3. How do you share travel photos with friends? While on the road or back at home?

  • @SEASunDodger Pretty sure I only keep my Facebook account so I can share photos with people.
  • @TheHomeChef Not a smart phone person so I bring laptop so I can download and share
  • @sillyamerica:  I add all my photos to my website. I use zenphoto to create galleries.
  • @InAForeignLand FB is the quickest way to share with a variety of friends!
  • @rtwdave My blog of course + Twitter and Facebook
  • @icreateimages I find #MobileMe public galleries the best way to get images back home when on the road

Q4. Dream destination(s) to photograph?

  • @nearafar Dream destination to photograph: Bhutan. It’s remote and the people seem amazing.
  • @triptrotting: top of mountain Kimilanjaro, Everest…probably because so few ppl make it there 🙂
  • @katyabroad Machu Picchu – because how photogenic is that place?! And… I’M GOING TO!!!
  • @twoonholiday Safari in Africa. #1 on the bucket list!
  • @HabagatCentral India. The country is so vivid and surreal. A nice subject for travel photography.
  • @smittytabb Dream destination to photograph for me would be Antarctica or a safari anywhere especially South Africa

Q5. Favorite landmark/site/location to photograph? Show us a pic!

Q6. Biggest camera/photography mistake you’ve made while traveling?

  • @ecuadorguide Not having charged the battery fully right at the moment I reeeeally need it (Yes, I have had my fair share of learning errors!)
  • @LindsayTessis Having camera stolen while sleeping on a train in Eastern Europe. Many great pics were lost!
  • @marksmayo Taking my brand new camera in the canoe with me on the Zambezi. One big wave, d’oh!
  • @MariaJessica Forgetting that I brought my camera with me!
  • @doubleadventure I dropped my lens cap off a cliff in Yellowstone and had to spend the remainder of the trip without one for my expensive lens.
  • @NatGeoKrista:  The pros never admit their mistakes! 😉

Q7. Favorite photo from your travels?

Q8. What makes a good travel photograph? Tips for beginners?

  • @lisajanPA Agreed – looking for the unexpected in the expected
  • @kasmantaslim follow the local, cacth their activities and place
  • @jbranigan Usually morninng or evening light, composition…I’m also big on contrasting colors
  • @MiddleSeatView you have to work for the best shots – lay on the ground, stand on a ledge, look crazy
  • @MalloryOnTravel Zoom with your FEET not the lens!
  • @kirsten_al fearlessness, is an important characteristic to photographer capturing great travel photographs

Q9. How far will you go to take a good picture?

  • @adventurati Getting close is much better than zoom lens!
  • @raghavmodi The other side of the globe if someone pays for the plane ticket 😉
  • @FlyingPhotog Right to the edge of harm’s way, cautiously.
  • @MyIslandArtJeff Lot’s farther than my wife thinks I should go I lose all track of time and space!
  • @travel_version: Not much I won’t do to take a good picture, honestly. I’d rather look like a fool than miss a good shot.
